Many people are familiar, often from childhood holidays, with the more frequented parts of Cornwall such as Looe, St Ives, Padstow and Newquay, but there are so many other ‘lesser-known’ locations just waiting to be discovered. Our “Insider’s Guide to Cornwall” will introduce you to some of these fabulous places, starting with The Lizard.
Introducing The Lizard
Welcome to the first step in discovering idyllic, dramatic, and often hidden areas of Cornwall with our guide to some of its most quaint and less-visited treasures. With so much history and untapped beauty across Cornwall, it’s always helpful to have a guiding hand to point out some areas of interest to explore. Choosing a motorhome or campervan break in Cornwall, with all of freedom this give you, allows you to take your time and get the most out of this most picturesque of counties.
We will start our journey at the southernmost point of Cornwall, The Lizard, then head west towards the picturesque hamlet of Durgan. For those seeking to Immerse themselves in views of rugged coastline, white coves, wooded creeks, and breath-taking scenery, you truly couldn’t ask for more.
Whilst many people will head straight to the more popular destinations In The Lizard, we have handpicked a collection of Cornish gems to share with you.
Downas Cove, Kennack
Located on the most deserted section of The Lizard, is Downas Cove in Kennack, a wonderful often missed location to explore. This isolated sandy cove beach is dominated by a large freshwater stream running through it. As with much of The Lizard’s geology, you will find its cliffs and rock formations to be very serpentine in shape, with its own small grassy headland not disappointing. In the warmer months, it is a perfect destination for snorkelling, or simply relaxing in the sun.
With a National Trust car park located north east of the cove, or a scenic walk along the South West Coast Path from Kennack Sands, you will find the journey to have lots of breathtaking views, as enjoyable as the destination itself.

Leggan Cove, St Keverne
Being Cornwall’s best-kept secret, The Lizard encompasses some the most beautiful and enchanting beaches and coves in the UK, so we must mention one more in our guide: Leggan Cove in St Keverne. This shingle and coarse grey sanded beach leads on to fabulously crystal-clear waters and is accessed via a footpath, through fields. Sheltered by its sloping cliffs behind, Leggan Cove is another great location for soaking up the sun during the summer months or an afternoon stroll at any time of the year.
This is a beautiful beach and well worth the trek and for the little ones (and the older ones amongst us). It has the added bonus of rock pools to explore when the tide is out. Leggan Cove is located approximately one mile east of St. Keverne and is nestled between two disused quarries at Dean Point and Porthoustock. Views across the cove are mesmerising from the South West Coastal path located above and shouldn’t be missed.

With plenty of parking, a wonderful café, and lots to explore, Glendurgan Garden and Beach make for a wonderfully relaxing day out with plenty of nearby facilities and attractions. Please note: the gardens are seasonal and open again in February 2021.
