An Insider’s Guide to Cornwall: Tintagel & Bude

Tintagel - Tintagel Castle - Cornish Motorhome Hire

A Mythical Landscape

If you love exploring landscapes immersed in myths and legends and swimming in the wild expanse of the sea, Tintagel and Bude are the perfect destinations for a truly magical motorhome getaway. Scattered along the coast, you will find picturesque waterfalls, striking cliffs, hidden beaches, and mysterious caverns and ruins.

Once you have picked up the keys for your temporary home away from home and left Liskeard, it will take approximately 45 minutes to get to Tintagel via the A395 and B3254.

Tintagel - King Arthur's Sword - Cornish Motorhome Hire

The Legend of King Arthur

At the heart of Tintagel you can discover the ruins of Tintagel Castle, the birthplace of King Arthur. The magnificent scenery will take your breath away before you even start exploring the castle and its surroundings.

Just below the headland, you will find the captivating Merlin’s Cave, where you can venture through a dark and narrow cavern into the opposite cove. A word to the wise: you will need a torch, steady footing, and low tide to make the most of your escapade. The caves opposite are also an excellent place for a peaceful swim if the conditions are calm.

If you want to follow in King Arthur’s footsteps even further, St. Nectan’s Kieve is said to be where the knights of the Round Table were baptised before they began their quest for the Holy Grail. This deep, circular pool (kieve) is part of a double waterfall surrounded by natural beauty and is a spectacular sight. As a sacred place named after the Cornish Saint Nectan, you will see prayer flags and numerous steps leading to a shrine room.

An Exploration of Nature and History

If you are feeling a bit more adventurous, there is plenty more exploration to do. Just one mile south of Tintagel, you can venture behind Hole Beach at Treknow Cliff to find Lanterdan Quarry, where the miners left an impressive 60-foot pinnacle, followed by smaller stacks and the occasional stalactites if you hike towards Trebarwith.

Set in a secluded woodland reminiscent of a fairy tale, Penhallam Manor’s foundations, originating from a 13th-century manor house, can be discovered where nature has taken over with grass-covered bricks and a moat surrounding the ruins.

If you venture one mile south of Millook Haven on the coastal path, you can experience the tranquillity and enchantment of the ancient oak woods on the steep cliffs of Dizzard, which are over 6,000 years old.

Why not hire a kayak and explore the breathtaking sea caves? Between Boscastle and Pentargon, you can find a 50-metre-long tunnel, while under Glebe Cliff between Tintagel and Penhallic Point, there is a vast cavern.

A Family Day Out

If you have little ones, there is still plenty to do in Tintagel and Bude. Crooklets Beach in Bude is a fantastic place to visit for a fun day out, where you can build sandcastles, swim in the sea, relax in the sunshine, and explore rock pools. You will be pleased to find a playground for kids and even a surfing school if you are feeling athletic. Once you feel peckish, there is also a beach café where you can eat in or take away – the choice is yours.

Summerleaze Beach in Bude is a more extensive beach where you can also have lots of fun surfing, swimming and sunbathing. There is even a semi-natural tidal pool, Bude Sea Pool, where you and your loved ones can safely swim in the wild on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean without worrying about rip currents. What’s more, it is free for everyone to experience as there are no costs, restrictions or booking fees.

Tintagel - Otter - Cornish Motorhome Hire

Discover Wildlife in Tintagel & Bude

For those who love animals, the Tamar Otter & Wildlife Centre in Launceston is a great place to see super cute otters playing. These creatures are typically nocturnal, so you might not be able to see them in the wild, but the sanctuary allows you to see them up close. Not only will you see otters, but you will also find wallabies, deer, owls, peacocks, meerkats and more. If you prefer a structured timeline, the otters’ feeding times are between 12.00pm and 3.00pm, while Birds of Prey talks are from 11.30am to 2.30pm.

If you want to see wildlife in their natural habitat, you can spot peregrine falcons along the coast from Bude to Padstow, starting at Beeny Cliff. It will help if you have a keen eye, as these birds of prey are the fastest animals in the world, reaching over 200mph when diving from the sky.

One of the largest grey seal colonies resides on the north coast of Buckator Cove at Beeny. From autumn to early winter, you will have the best chance of spotting a seal pup when they are at peak numbers.

Tintagel - Crackington Haven - Cornish Motorhome Hire

Best Kept Beach Secrets

After a chock-full itinerary, we are sure you would like some time to simply relax on the beach. Crackington Haven is a popular cove to unwind and experience the sea breeze and sunshine. There is even a pub where you can enjoy a cold pint and a hearty meal. If you follow the rocks to the right of the bay at low tide, you will discover the natural Mermaid Pool, where you can dive straight in and swim to your heart’s content. If you wait long enough into the evening, the sunset will be a spectacular sight to see.

Just one mile east of Tintagel at Bossiney Haven, you will find a stunning cove next to impressive cliffs and a small arch called Elephant Rock. This beach is also a fantastic place to snorkel if you fancy. At low tide, the sandy beach connects to Benoath Cove.

For an untamed beach with long stretches of sand, rocks, and rip currents, head two miles south of Trebarwith on the coast path. This cove is a great place for surfing and exploring sea caves. There are also various nearby cafes to choose from, offering a tasty alternative to a sandy packed lunch.
